Gradle can automate the building, testing, publishing, deployment and more of software packages or other types of projects such as generated static websites, generated documentation or indeed anything else. Gradle는 빌드 자동화 툴로, Maven의 대안으로 많이 제시되고 있다. 사실은 새로운 툴이라기 보다는 Maven + Ant + 스크립트언어 라고 보는 시각도 있다. Maven이 편하다는 장점에 더불어, 기본지원하지 않는 과정에 대해서 추가하는 고생이 생기게 마련이다. 특히 멀티 프로젝트 구성을 하는 경우에 Maven은 상속구조로 만들어야 하기 때문에, 공통설정을 위하여 빈프로젝트를 만들어야 하는 경우가 발생한다.
